A post about opening up about the ups & downs of your PhD track

I’ve written this blog post for phdaily.nl, a platform that we (a few PhD students from the Erasmus Graduate School for Social Sciences & Humanities) founded to cover matters that ‘matter’ to us, as PhD students and aspiring academics. I’ve wanted to write about mental health and doing a PhD for a long time.

It’s a very very delicate matter to many and is still a topic that is not often and not openly spoken about. At the moment I’m halfway down my PhD track and I’ve seen one of my dearest colleagues leave, whereas a few others are overworked or not as happy as when they started. It happens, and although it’s a very personal struggle, I wish there were more people opening up about the ups & downs they’ve been through. Not to bash or blame the system, not at all, I just want people to realize they’re not alone in these feelings and that it’s nothing to be ashamed of or something to hide from conversation.
